Texas auto loan calculator

What a financed car actually costs out the door in Texas — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Texas credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Texas’s.

Local tax in Texas

No local add-on to the motor vehicle sales tax: 6.25% is the whole tax on a purchase, unlike the Texas general sales tax which carries local components. (The local sports and community venue district tax reaches short-term RENTALS only.) PRIVATE-PARTY SALES use Standard Presumptive Value: tax is computed on the GREATER of the sales price or 80% of SPV, unless a certified appraisal is provided. Related flat charges: $90 new resident tax in lieu of use tax, and a $10 gift tax. County registration add-ons run $0 to $31.50.
