Maine auto loan calculator

What a financed car actually costs out the door in Maine — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Maine credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Maine’s.

Local tax in Maine

Maine imposes no local option sales tax; 5.5% is the entire sales tax on a vehicle purchase. Separately, Maine municipalities levy an ANNUAL motor vehicle excise tax under 36 M.R.S. 1482, collected by the town before registration. It is computed on MSRP — not purchase price, and not depreciated market value — times a statewide statutory mill rate stepping down by model year: 24 mills year 1, 17.5 year 2, 13.5 year 3, 10 year 4, 6.5 year 5, and 4 mills year 6 and after. Because that is MSRP times a statutory mill rate with no assessment ratio and no locally set rate, it does not fit the annualVehiclePropertyTax shape and that object is omitted.
