Local tax in Maine

Maine imposes no local option sales tax; 5.5% is the entire sales tax on a vehicle purchase. Separately, Maine municipalities levy an ANNUAL motor vehicle excise tax under 36 M.R.S. 1482, collected by the town before registration. It is computed on MSRP — not purchase price, and not depreciated market value — times a statewide statutory mill rate stepping down by model year: 24 mills year 1, 17.5 year 2, 13.5 year 3, 10 year 4, 6.5 year 5, and 4 mills year 6 and after. Because that is MSRP times a statutory mill rate with no assessment ratio and no locally set rate, it does not fit the annualVehiclePropertyTax shape and that object is omitted.
