What a taxable index-fund account is actually worth after expense-ratio drag and after Tennessee takes its share of the gain — which, in most states, is not at the federal preferential rate.

Tennessee does not tax capital gains

Your gain is untouched by Tennessee. Only federal tax applies. No Tennessee tax on capital gains. Even at its height the Hall income tax did not reach capital gains -- it was a tax on interest and dividend income, and gain on the sale of stock fell outside it. With the Hall tax repealed for tax periods beginning on or after January 1, 2021 there is no individual-level Tennessee tax on investment income of any kind, and Tennessee has enacted nothing resembling Washington's standalone capital gains excise.
