Virginia auto loan calculator

What a financed car actually costs out the door in Virginia — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Virginia taxes you on the full price, trade-in or not

In most states a trade-in reduces the amount you pay sales tax on. In Virginia it does not — tax is charged on the full negotiated price even when you hand over another car. Because the tax is normally rolled into the loan, you also pay interest on it for the life of the loan. The calculator shows what that rule costs you as its own line.

Local tax in Virginia

The 4.15% Motor Vehicle Sales and Use Tax is a single statewide rate collected by DMV at titling, with a $75 minimum, and there is no county or city add-on for ordinary vehicles. Localities do not layer a local sales tax onto a car purchase; they levy a separate recurring annual personal property tax instead. Different rates apply only to mopeds, ATVs and off-road motorcycles (6% in Northern Virginia / Hampton Roads / Central Virginia, 7.0% in the Historic Triangle, 5.3% elsewhere). The dealer processing fee IS part of the taxable price. A separate Highway Use Fee applies to fuel-efficient and electric vehicles.
