New Jersey auto loan calculator

What a financed car actually costs out the door in New Jersey — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

New Jersey credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually New Jersey’s.

Local tax in New Jersey

New Jersey has no general county or municipal sales tax, so 6.625% is the rate essentially statewide. Two narrow reduced-rate regimes exist — designated Urban Enterprise Zones, where qualifying in-zone retail sales are taxed at half the standard rate, and a similar arrangement in Salem County — but neither ordinarily applies to a vehicle purchase by a buyer registering elsewhere. Note that actual MVC title and registration fees are EXCLUDED from the taxable sales price while dealer documentary fees are INCLUDED.
