Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Michigan’s.

No local add-on — Michigan does not authorize county or municipal sales taxes, so 6% is the complete rate statewide. Michigan's annual registration is however value-based (a percentage of original MSRP), which behaves economically somewhat like a recurring vehicle tax even though it is styled a registration fee.
