Local tax in Louisiana

Local tax in Louisiana is unusually heavy and often exceeds the state rate. Most parishes and many municipalities levy it; LDR's motor vehicle publication puts the local range at 1.85% to 7%, so combined rates commonly land between 8% and 11%+. CRITICAL SOURCING RULE: 'The rate of tax is based upon the domicile of the purchaser, not the location of the seller' — use the buyer's parish, not the dealership's. Both state and local tax are paid to the Office of Motor Vehicles at titling. STATE RATE SCHEDULE: the rate rose from 4.45% to 5.00% effective 2025-01-01 and is scheduled to step DOWN to 4.75% on 2030-01-01. Beware that LDR's own vehicle brochure R-20164 still prints the superseded 4.45%.
