Iowa taxes a lease up front, not monthly

The whole sales tax on a lease is due at signing here rather than riding on each monthly payment. That is a different method, not a different rate, and it changes what you owe on the day — see the lease calculator above, which applies it.

Local tax in Iowa

Iowa does NOT charge ordinary sales tax on a vehicle subject to registration — that sales price is exempt from the 6% state sales tax. In its place Iowa imposes a one-time 'fee for new registration' of $10 PLUS 5% of the purchase price, paid to the county treasurer at initial titling. Two consequences for a calculator: the percentage is 5%, not Iowa's 6% sales tax rate; and local option sales taxes do NOT apply, because a local option tax cannot attach to something not subject to the state sales tax — so 5% is the full rate statewide. Do not forget the flat $10, charged in addition and added effective 2025-01-01.
