What a financed car actually costs out the door in Idaho — the sales tax this state really charges, whether it credits your trade-in, and what the payment does to what you can borrow for a house.

Idaho credits your trade-in against the sales tax

Trading a car in here reduces the amount sales tax is charged on, so you are taxed on the price less your trade-in allowance. That is the common rule, but it is not universal — a handful of states tax the full sticker price regardless, and the calculator below applies whichever rule is actually Idaho’s.

Local tax in Idaho

Idaho has NO general county or city sales tax, so 6% is effectively the full rate statewide. The only local sales taxes are voter-approved 'resort city' taxes in a small number of tourism-dependent cities, and auditorium/travel-convention district taxes. Auditorium district taxes reach only short-term lodging and cannot apply to a vehicle. A resort city is the one exception that could: it may tax everything subject to the state sales tax, though many limit theirs to lodging, restaurant food and alcohol. Treat 6% as the working rate and check the city only if the buyer is in a resort city.
