Kansas at a glance
- Average premium
- $4,868/ yr
- At $300,000 of dwelling coverage.
- Standard deductible
- $1,000
- Applies to everyday claims.
- Storm deductible — separate, and much larger
- $6,000(2% of coverage)
- What you would pay out of pocket on $300,000 of coverage before a storm claim pays anything — not the $1,000 above.
- Insurer of last resort
- Kansas FAIR Plan (Kansas All-Industry Placement Facility)
- Kansas' insurer of last resort: a not-for-profit association formed by Kansas insurers to write basic property coverage for applicants who cannot obtain it in the voluntary market. It is materially narrower than a standard homeowners policy - a property-only form with theft and personal liability available as options rather than built in - and its limits are capped, with coverage unable to exceed 100% of actual cash value or present market value, whichever is less, and unable to exceed a recent purchase price absent evidence of increased value. Because it is a fallback rather than a competitor, a Kansas homeowner who can still buy in the voluntary market will almost always do better there.
